How to compress a video
- Choose your video.
- Pick a quality ("Recommended for sharing" suits most videos), or enter the size in MB the file must fit in. Optionally choose a lower resolution.
- Press Compress, watch the progress, and download the smaller video.
Ways to make a video smaller
- Quality: "Looks like the original", "Recommended for sharing" or "Smallest file".
- Target size: enter a size in MB (for example 10 MB for Discord or 25 MB for email) and the bitrate is calculated to fit. If the result is still too big, it is compressed again, and made smaller in pixels if the browser's encoder can't go lower.
- Resolution: 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p. Lowering the resolution saves the most.
- Remove the sound when you don't need it.
Good to know
- The result is an MP4 file (H.264 video, AAC audio) that plays everywhere. If your browser can't make H.264, WebM is used instead.
- Compressing re-encodes the video, so some quality is lost. The stronger the compression, the more you see it.
- The new file doesn't keep the original's metadata, such as the recording location or the device name.
- Opens MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM, MKV and MPEG-TS. No server-imposed file size limits. The new file is made in your device's memory, so very long videos need a computer with enough free memory.
- It uses your browser's built-in video technology. It works best in current Chrome and Edge; recent Safari and Firefox versions work too. If your browser can't create a format, the tool says so.
Your video stays on your device
The video is processed by your own browser and computer. It is never uploaded, so private and unreleased footage stays with you.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take?
It depends on the video and your computer. Most phones and laptops compress a 1-minute 1080p clip in under a minute; the progress bar shows the time left.
Will the result be exactly my target size?
It aims slightly below it. If the first result is too big, the video is compressed again, and if needed made smaller in pixels (the result says so). A target that is far too small for the length is refused with the smallest size that works.
Is there a watermark?
No.
Is my video uploaded?
No. It is processed in your browser and never sent anywhere.
