Return on investment (ROI)
–Gain ÷ amount invested
Gain or loss
–
Yearly return (annualized)
–The same growth spread evenly over each year
Money multiple
–Amount returned ÷ amount invested
A 30% gain over 3 years is not 10% a year: the yearly return compounds, so it is about 9.1%.

How to work out ROI
- Enter the amount invested, with fees and other costs.
- Enter the amount returned, or what it is worth now.
- Add the years held to see the yearly return.
ROI and yearly return
ROI is the gain divided by what you put in: 50,000 that became 68,000 is a gain of 18,000, an ROI of 36%.
ROI ignores time, so the calculator also gives the annualized return: the yearly rate that grows the investment to the same amount in the same time. 36% over 3 years is 10.8% a year, not 12%, because returns compound.
Good to know
- Count every cost in the amount invested (fees, taxes paid, repairs for a property) for an honest ROI.
- A loss shows as a negative ROI.
- Use the CAGR Calculator to find the end value at a given yearly rate.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the yearly return lower than ROI divided by the years?
Because growth compounds: each year's gain also grows in the following years, so a smaller yearly rate is enough to reach the same total.
