How to use the margin calculator
- Choose what you know: cost and price, cost and a target margin, or cost and a markup.
- Enter the two numbers.
- Read the selling price, profit, margin and markup.
Margin and markup are different
| Formula | Cost 60, price 100 | |
|---|---|---|
| Profit | Price − cost | 40 |
| Gross margin | Profit ÷ price | 40% |
| Markup | Profit ÷ cost | 66.67% |
Pricing for a target margin
To earn a 40% margin on something that costs 60, divide the cost by (1 − 0.40): 60 ÷ 0.6 = 100. Adding 40% to the cost (84) would only give a 28.6% margin.
Frequently asked questions
Can a margin be over 100%?
No. Margin is a share of the selling price, so it is always below 100%. Markup can be any size: a 200% markup triples the cost.
Is anything sent anywhere?
