How to check your grammar

  1. Paste or type your text, or open a text file.
  2. Choose American or British English and what to check.
  3. Go through the findings: apply a suggestion, ignore it, or add a word to your dictionary.

What it checks

  • Spelling, with suggestions, using the open-source Hunspell dictionaries for American and British English. Web addresses, e-mail addresses, numbers, acronyms and words like "iPhone" are skipped.
  • Grammar: "a" or "an", capital letters at the start of sentences, a lowercase "i", repeated words ("the the"), and commonly confused words and phrases such as "could of", "better then", "their is", "it's own" and "should have went".
  • Punctuation and spacing: double spaces, spaces before commas and periods, missing spaces after them, doubled punctuation, and brackets or quotation marks that are never closed.
  • Style suggestions you can switch off: wordy phrases ("in order to" → "to"), clichés, the passive voice and very long sentences.

What it can't do

This checker follows clear rules, so it is fast, private and explains every finding, but it doesn't understand what you mean the way a person or an AI model does. It won't catch a correctly spelled wrong word ("form" instead of "from") or judge whether a sentence makes sense. Read your text once more before you send it, or listen to it with Read Aloud.

Your text stays private

The dictionary is part of this page, so your text is checked inside your browser. It is never uploaded, stored or used to train anything. Words you add to your dictionary are saved only in this browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is this grammar checker free?

Yes, with no sign-up, no word limit and no premium version.

Does it work for British English?

Yes. Choose British English and words like "colour" and "organise" count as correct.

Is it as good as Grammarly?

It catches the common mistakes and explains them, but it doesn't rewrite sentences or understand context like AI-based tools. The difference: nothing you write is uploaded.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
