How words are counted
Words are counted with your browser's built-in language rules, so text in languages written without spaces, such as Chinese or Japanese, is counted sensibly too. Reading time assumes 238 words per minute and speaking time 130 words per minute, typical averages for adults.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens in your browser and your text is not saved or sent anywhere.

Yes. Numbers such as 2024 count as one word each.
Why might my count differ from a word processor?
Programs treat hyphenated words, numbers and symbols slightly differently. Differences are usually very small.
