How to calculate VAT
- Choose whether your amount is before VAT (net) or includes VAT (gross).
- Enter the amount and the VAT rate.
- Read the VAT, the net and the gross amounts.
Removing VAT the right way
To take 20% VAT out of £120 you can't subtract 20% of £120 (£24): VAT was added to the net price, so divide instead. £120 ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, and the VAT is £20.
Frequently asked questions
Does this work for sales tax and GST too?
Yes. Any tax charged as a percentage of the price works the same way. For India, the GST Calculator also shows CGST and SGST.
