How to create a TAR.GZ file
- Choose files or a folder, or drag them in.
- Pick TAR.GZ (compressed) or TAR (not compressed).
- Download the archive.
Good to know
- Folders keep their structure, and each file keeps its date.
- Long names, and names with accents or other alphabets, are stored with PAX headers, which GNU tar, bsdtar, 7-Zip and macOS all read.
- Every file gets the usual permissions (rw-r--r--), because web pages can't read permissions from your disk. Scripts need chmod +x again after unpacking.
- TAR files can't have a password. For a protected archive, use Password-Protect ZIP.
- Compression uses the gzip built into your browser.
How to unpack it
On Linux and macOS, run tar -xzf name.tar.gz (or tar -xf name.tar). Windows 10 and 11 have the same tar command in the Command Prompt, and 7-Zip opens both formats.

Frequently asked questions
TAR.GZ or ZIP?
ZIP opens with a double-click on Windows and macOS. TAR.GZ is the norm on Linux servers and for source code, and often comes out smaller, because all the files are compressed together.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The archive is made on your device.
