This uses a different reader, which can often still draw pages of badly damaged PDFs, and saves each page as a picture in a new PDF. The pages look the same, but their text can't be selected or searched any more (OCR PDF can add searchable text back).
Repair rebuilds the file's structure from the parts that can still be read. It can't bring back content that is missing from the file: if a download stopped early, the end of the document may be gone. Check the repaired PDF before you delete the original.

How to repair a PDF
- Choose the damaged PDF: it is repaired straight away.
- Check the first page and the report.
- Download the repaired PDF, or rescue the pages as pictures if it still looks wrong.
What can be fixed
- A broken or missing index of the file's contents (the cross-reference table), the most common damage when a program crashes while saving or a file is changed by mistake.
- A broken list of pages: it is rebuilt from the pages found in the file.
- Files cut off at the end, as long as the pages themselves are there. Content that is missing from the file can't be brought back.
Rescue as pictures
When the structure can't be rebuilt, a second reader with its own recovery often still manages to draw the pages. Each page is then saved as a picture in a new PDF: it looks the same but its text can't be selected; OCR PDF can make it searchable again.
Your files stay on your device
Everything happens in your browser. Your PDFs are never uploaded, and this site's security policy blocks the page from sending files anywhere.

Why did my PDF get damaged?
Usually a download or copy that stopped early, a program that crashed while saving, or an email or file-sharing service that changed the file. Repair works best when most of the file is still there.
Can it open a password-protected PDF?
Only after the password is removed: use Unlock PDF first (you need to know the password).
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. It is repaired in your browser and never sent anywhere.
