Gaj is a square yard. A cent is 1/100 of an acre (435.6 sq ft) and a guntha 1/40 of an acre (1,089 sq ft). Bigha and other local units differ from state to state, so they aren't listed.

How to work out an area

  1. Choose the shape and the unit you measured in.
  2. Enter the sizes.
  3. Read the area, and pick the unit to show it in.

Shapes

  • Square, rectangle, circle, triangle (base and height, or three sides), trapezoid, parallelogram, rhombus, ellipse, circle sector and regular polygons.
  • The perimeter or circumference is shown too, where it can be worked out from the sizes.
  • For an L-shaped room or plot, split it into rectangles and add the areas.

Units

  • Square millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, hectares, square inches, feet, yards and miles, and acres.
  • Indian land units: gaj (a square yard), cent (1/100 acre, 435.6 sq ft) and guntha (1/40 acre, 1,089 sq ft). Bigha, kanal and other local units differ from state to state, so they aren't listed.

One gaj is one square yard: 9 square feet, or about 0.836 square metres.
