How to clean up file names

  1. Choose the files, or drag in a folder.
  2. Check the new names in the preview, and change any option you like.
  3. Download the renamed copies as a ZIP, or save them to a folder.

What gets cleaned

  • Accents become plain letters: é → e, ü → u, ß → ss, æ → ae.
  • Spaces and symbols become hyphens, apostrophes are dropped, and repeated hyphens are joined.
  • Everything is lowercase, extensions included (.JPG → .jpg).
  • Names that end up the same get -2, -3… so nothing is overwritten.

Good to know

  • Names written only in other alphabets (Chinese, Arabic, Cyrillic…) have no a–z letters left, so they would become "file". Choose "Remove accents" or "Keep all" under Characters to keep them.
  • Browsers can't rename files on your disk, so you get renamed copies: in a ZIP, or saved to a folder you pick (Chrome and Edge).
  • All the options of the Bulk File Renamer are here too: numbering, find and replace, text before or after.

Häufige Fragen

Why do file names matter on websites?

Spaces turn into %20 in web addresses, many servers treat Photo.JPG and photo.jpg as different files, and accented letters can be stored differently on macOS and Windows. Lowercase names with hyphens avoid all of that.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The new names are worked out in your browser and the copies are made on your device.
